Iraq like its neighbour Iran is located in West Asia. It additionally shares borders with Jordan, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Syria and Turkey.

Geographically, Iraq divides into four main regions:

  • The deserts to the west and south
  • The alluvial Plains consisting predominantly of marshland and lakes
  • The Northeastern Highlands
  • The Al-jazirah uplands lying to the north of the plains between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers

The climate of Iraq is mainly desert although the northern eastern highlands experience colder winters and the plains are prone to extensive flooding.

Iraq has the second largest proven reserves of oil in the world including the super-giant fields of Rumaila and Majnoon. Additionally Iraq has reserves of natural gas, phosphates and sulphur.
