Syria lies at the eastern end of the Mediterranean Sea sharing borders with Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey.

Syria consists of mountain ranges in the west, an inland steppe area accounting for about 75% of the land, desert to the east and in the south the Jabal al-Druze Range, a volcanic region last active in 1850 approx. The country enjoys a Mediterranean climate of hot summers and mild winters.

Syria holds a range of natural resources including oil, phosphates, mineral ores and asphalt.
