Turkmenistan is a Central Asian country bordered by Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan and Iran; it also has a coastal region by the Caspian Sea.

Turkmenistan is divided into five provinces and one capital city district: Ashgabat City and the provinces of Ahal, Balkan, Daşoguz, Lebap and Mary.

A large proportion of Turkmenistan is covered by the Karakum Desert one of the driest deserts in the world. To the west lies Mount Arlan part of the Great Balkan Range and to the southern earthquake region, the Kopet Dag Range of foothills, dry and sandy slopes, mountain plateaus, and steep ravines.

Turkmenistan possesses the world's fourth largest reserves of natural gas in addition to oil, sulphur and salt reserves.
