Ukraine lies for the most part within the Great European Plain, sharing borders with seven countries including Russia. It has coastal borders with the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov. Ukraine is divide by the Crimean Mountains, separating the southern region of Crimea from the rest of the country. It is further divided by the Dnieper River along a north-south axis.

The mountainous regions in Ukraine include the Carpathian Mountains in the west and the Crimean Mountains in the south. However the majority of the country is given over to fertile plains and plateau.

Ukraine has a temperate continental climate with cool winters and relatively warm summers although the climate in Crimea is of a more subtropical nature.

Ukraine’s natural resources include iron ore, coal, manganese, natural gas, oil, salt, sulfur, graphite, titanium and magnesium.
